Hi I am Lynn.
I was born in Seoul, South Korea but ended up being raised on the other side of the world, right here in a Flemish family in Antwerp. Growing up, I was a sensitive, impulsive child that loved dreaming up stories and collecting shiny crystals.
As I obtained my master’s degree in English literature it went without saying that I would follow the path of my family, who have worked their entire lives in the insurance industry. So I got a job at the world’s largest insurance broker. That’s when I started to notice something was off. I just couldn’t find satisfaction with the work I was doing, no matter how hard I tried.
A time of struggle and introspection followed. I confronted myself with the person I really am. Somebody who will find beauty wherever they go. I am fascinated by shapes, colours, textures, the movement of a scarf billowing in the breeze. Drawing on this essence, I revisited the past.
When I was young, my grandmother was close friends with a jeweller’s family. She often paid visits to them with me in tow. I still remember being mesmerized by the brilliance of diamonds and gold behind the glass. Wearing jewelry, let alone creating it, was something mysterious and exhilarating to me.
So I took a chance reeducating myself in the craftmanship of the goldsmith. What better place to learn the trade than in Antwerp, the historical diamond capital of Europe? I learned how to mold fine metals into the lines and shapes I love so much. How to combine them with precious gems into a sophisticated jewel. To add a touch of my own creativity to matter made me come alive again.
This is the beginning of Nuncha Rhynn Jewelry. ‘Nuncha’ is a combination of the Korean word ‘nunchi’ 눈치 and the ‘A’ of Antwerp. ‘Nunchi’ stands for the social art of reading the room and responding appropriately. Personally, I like to expand its meaning into the art of communicating without words. ‘Rhynn’ is my Korean version of ‘Lynn,’ again a mix of both Belgium and Korea come together.
